MINUTES for 3/7/06
And here are the minutes…oh so exciting!
FUND REQUEST APPROVAL
The people working on peace week needed close to 100 dollars for various supplies, copies, and other materials…we approved their fund request at the meeting. Any of the profit from various events our money went towards will go back to the progressives account. This should be great and exciting to see our money doing great things!
PEACE WEEK
Peace Week is April 3-7. There are going to be many awesome events throughout the week. There will be speakers, activities, and other sorts of cool events. The next meeting will be on Tuesday March 28 @ 6 p.m. in the lounge by 259 CC. This is the week after we get back from spring break. Another note if anyone knows any contacts let Kyle Barber know at barber.kyle@students.uwlax.edu.
*If anyone has any old, soft, bright materials (like cloth or old jeans) keep them around for a project peace week is doing with project Linus and making blankets. Watch for more information on this topic!
MARRIAGE BAN
The question of the marriage ban is coming upon us. On the November (November 7) ballot there will be a referendum posing the question of what defines marriage. If the state votes yes to the referendum on gay marriage gay and lesbian couples will be banned from recognizing their commitments to one another through marriage or civil union. The denial of marriage would also drop many legal benefits for gay and lesbian couples that straight married couples receive. This is pretty HUGE so if you are interested in helping to ma ke sure this referendum does not pass check out fairwisconsin, actionwisconsin.com OR come to the training session TONIGHT @ 5:30 in the La Crosse Library and learn more of how you can help with the campaign! This would be a great opportunity especially for next year when we are really going to have to be campaigning this issue J
MIDWEST CLEAN ENERGY CONFERENCE
The Midwest Clean Energy Conference sounds like it was a blast! Kristen, Kevin, and Carrie had a great time and learned A LOT. The conference boosted their excitement about clean energy on our campus even more! They would really l ike to get our campus to commit to using 90% renewable energy by 2050. The big idea is that if our campus is responsible our students will be to. There are many things that we have already done or are in the process of doing to make this happen. Check out campusclimatechallenge.com for more information or talk to Kevin about direct action. Watch for more news to come on this way exciting idea and how to make sure it happens.
HOEDOWN IN THE HEARTLAND
On April 28-30th there will be a social action training conference @ Grinnell College in Iowa. If you would like to know more information email ftp@grinnell.edu.
AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL
Zak and a number of others are ready to get Amnesty International back up and running. The meetings are on Thursdays in 329 CC @ 7:30. If you are interested or maybe just want some more information let Zak know @ wakefiel.zech@students.uwlax.edu.
SAMI RASOULI
Sami Rasouli is an Iraqi American that will be on campus on Wednesday March 22 in GMH @7 p.m. He will be speaking about his experiences and opinions on things like the war. It should be very interesting. There will be more information to come.
ASSASINS
The college Dems are putting on Assasins (Margaret Cho’s movie) in the Ward Room @ 6:00 p.m. on Thursday the 9th. It should be really funny and interesting…so go check it out J for a break from studying!!
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
We are really going to need people to start writing letters to editor and writing articles to get our voices heard in the upcoming months. If you are interested in a way awesome way to get your voice out there let Jackie know at Jarvis.jacq@students.uwlax.edu and she can help you get started, give you some more information, and direction. You would be a great help AND be heard!!
EARTH DAY
The next Earth Day mtg. Will be this Thursday the 9th@ 7p.m. in 259 CC. Come if you are at all interested and help you are willing to give is GREAT!! Bring plastic bottles if you have any…there i s a project going on with them for Earth Day.
