One of them says "POAC News". It stands for "Project for the OLD American Century" (in contrast to the PNAC, the 'neo-cons', such as Dick Cheney and Paul Wolfowitz, responsible for the idea of invading Iraq) and it's a News Aggregator (an aggregator being something that gathers relevant content in one place for easy viewing); every day there are new headlines.

More than anything else, this website is what keeps me informed. I want to be obsolete. Please, take 5-10 minutes every day to skim the headlines for anything interesting (sometimes the story isn't any deeper than the headline, sometimes it is). You can get them sent to your e-mail by signing up for the "Daily Email Newsletter" on the left side (I haven't noticed spam).

A day is 1,440 minutes long.
Fighting Bob Fest
This weekend, Sept 7-8
Networking, progressive speakers, and entertainment. The tradition of Bob La Follette is carried on by providing a forum for progressive ideas and issues facing WI and the nation. 6,000 attendees last year. I would say more, but the website is really detailed, check it out.
We will be selling soup and scones as a fund raiser. If you can’t make it but like cooking soup, please let us know; cooking either tomorrow or Friday. People attending the event should meet at 1716 State Street, to leave at 5:30 on Friday to carpool down to Baraboo
www.fightingbobfest.org

Tent State
Sept 14-15
This movement involves several universities and started at Rutgers University in 2003. Its focus is on decisions that affect higher education, and teaching each other. We are more or less making plans to pitch tents and having a campfire on Drake Field (the elevated field between the Arts building and the REC) to recruit and to just hang out. Yes, we are having a campfire on campus. Need help advertising, and supply your own tent/bag.
http://www.tentstate.com/
*Great way to meet friendly people if you are new to campus

Peace Bus
Background: we have been doing fundraising over the years to get a progressives tour bus so we can hit up our events in a more sustainable fashion. Update: we have the funds! Now we just need to pick out a bus. We hope to have it by late Sept/ mid Oct. It is in California, so we might need some outgoing folks to take a roadtrip to retrieve it in the near future.

Power Shift 2007
Nov 2-3
First national youth climate summit in Washington D.C.
Expecting 3-5 thousand students with the same progressive ideas.
Networking, workshops, big speakers, fun.
Goal: to shift the presidential candidates’ stances on Global Warming.
Contact Carrie at Carrie.wisinski@gmail.com for more info

Treasurer Needed
Progressives are looking for a treasurer, any takers?

Academic building meeting
Sept 14 from 1-4pm
Open to anyone. Let’s ensure the new academic building is sustainable.

Talloires Declaration
Sustainability document which, if passed, would ensure that important decisions made on campus consider sustainability. We have tons of signatures of students and faculty and a task force that meets Fridays at 9am, which are open to anyone. He hass won a Pulitzer Prize for his recent best seller Guns, Germs and Steel and is a professor at UCLA. His presentation will be entitled Why the World Runs on Water. This is a FREE event, but you must pick up a ticket at UWL's office on International Education or the La Crosse Center. http://www.rivers2006.org

Indigenous Environmental Network - Protecting Mother Earth Conference - Leech Lake, MN - July 6 - 9 www.ienearth.org Contact Guy Wolf if interested in attending and/or volunteering.

Freedom From Oil Action Camp - Southern Indiana - July 8 - 15
America has a deadly addiction to oil. We now devour twenty-five percent of the planets petroleum. Our dependence spawns resource wars that breed hatred and put our young people in harms way. It wreaks chaos with our climate, creating Super-Storms that take thousands of lives and destroy communities. It threatens front-line indigenous communities that live in oil-rich regions around the world. By day, participants will learn hard skills to build strategic and synergistic campaigns. By night, visionary thinkers will posit what our society can and will look like when we have moved beyond oil. Their most recent campaigns will be dealing with the amendment on Gay marriage/civil unions etc. and the other deals with the cost of higher education. Both are HUGE issues. If you want to know more information let David Glisch-Sanchez know at academic@unitedcouncil.net.
GOING TO BAT FOR STUDENTS: The Student Association and if you want YOU will be lobbying in Madison next Thursday (April 20th) to stop tuition increases and increase financial aid. Go spend a day in Madison and only pay for your own lunch. Go down to Madison to make a difference! If you want more information…b/c there is a lot more to know let Chelsea know at oneil.chel@students.uwlax.edu.
WRAP UP ON PEACE WEEK Thanks to everyone who helped out with peace week! It was a great time with all sorts of awesome events. Good job to everyone that worked on it J
COALITION OF DEFENSE: Schryver is interested in starting up a Coalition of Defense on campus that would include a whole number of different groups on campus. It would allow us to come together at times when it would be good to stick together against things we all agree about and that are really important. If anyone is interested in these ideas, would want to help, and/or would like to know more information let Schryver know at schryver.ryan@students.uwlax.edu.
SB1-SENTATE BILL 1: The UW-L Progressives have officially endorsed a letter urging Wisconsin State Assembly Leader Mike Heubsch to bring ethics reform legislation to a vote. Republican leadership is currently preventing a bill titled SB1 from reaching the floor for debate. The bill would replace the currently corrupt Ethics Board and Election Board with an independent agency that can investigate and prosecute ethical and financial wrongdoings within the state government. In the wake of many state-wide corruption scandals it is largely believed this legislation would pass if brought to a vote. Hopefully our support helps move the bill along!
EARTH WEEK: Earth Week and Earth Day are both next week! There are tons of awesome things going on. One main thing that will be happening will be a FREE lecture by Dave Foreman (who is huge in the conservation world) on Wednesday, April 26th @ 6p.m. in Valhalla on campus. He should be a great speaker and have a lot of very interesting information to share with us. The next mtg. Will be today ThursdayApril 13th in 259 CC @ 7p.m. There will be a lot of Crafts to work on today so it should be very fun. One last thing…VOLUNTEERS are needed so if you are interested in helping out with Earth Week let Kristen know @ pitts.kris@students.uwlax.edu.
ENVIRONMENTAL COUNCIL: The next Environmental Council meeting will be TODAY as well @ 4p.m. in CC (ask front desk what room number).
CAMPUS CLIMATE CHALLENGE: The next Campus Climate Challenge mtg will be TODAY too. There will be a meeting after the Environmental Council meeting on Thursday, April 13th, at about 5:00 or 5:15. We will meet in Cartwright near the Ward room. Come learn how to raise awareness on our campus about clean energy and make this new committee very powerful.
ENVIRONMENTAL VICTORY: The energy bill passed! A big part of why it did is thanks to Kapanke and his support. Sending him coal for Christmas and writing letters to the editor helped a lot. We are thinking of having a celebration to thank Kapanke for his support. This would give us the opportunity to do a lot more than just thank him as well (building more support for more clean energy in the future etc.). The tentative date is Monday April 24th in 259 CC, Port O’ Call, or the Concordia Ballroom. Watch for more info to come.
TATOOS: If you have a tattoo and would be comfortable talking about why you got it, where you got it, how big it is etc and would like to help out a friend in analyzing gender differences in tattoos let Janna know @ janna_dziak@hotmail.com.
AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL: Amnesty International is re-starting! If you are interested in doing something about human injustices in the international community this group is for you! Come to the mtgs on Thursdays @ 7:30 in 329 CC.
SLEEPING IN THE CENTER OF TOWN: Every night children in Uganda have to commute to the center of town and sleep to stay safe and avoid being kidnapped. By going to sleep at the YMCA you will be showing your recognition and more for these children room. Watch for more info to come on sleeping at the YMCA on April 29th to take part in a national movement.
OPEN DISCUSSION CLUB: A group has been started here on campus by some awesome people that allows for the discussion of some very important issues in today’s world. If you are interested in discussing and learning about some important issues check it out on Wednesdays @ 6:00 p.m. in 263 CC.
MEETING STRUCTURE: It’s getting to that time of the year when we like to start thinking about possible improvements to our meetings for the following year. Start thinking about what you like and do not like so much about our meetings and what you would want to improve. At the next mtg we will also be thinking about new leadership within the group and possibly have elections. So think about if you are interested or know someone you would think is great to have as a leader within our organization
SKILLS WORKSHOPS AND TRAINING SESSIONS: Think about different skills and things you would like to learn and understand from our elder progressives J . We are thinking about having a day of training to pass down the skills we already have in some of our older members. So far this day is looking like it will be May 5 (Cinco de Mayo) and after all the training a little fun will be had…party party. This would be that Friday before finals, but there are no finals that Saturday or Sunday so this day would be perfect! Watch for more info to come.
WE GOT A YES!!!: A huge congratulations and thank you to everyone who worked the least little bit on the vote yes for victory campaign! You all did amazing things for the future of the country!! Your work payed off and we got a 54% yes vote…Ron Kind even mentioned La Crosse’s victory to Donald Rumsfeld J . GREAT JOB TO EVERYONE

March 07 minutes

MINUTES for 3/7/06
And here are the minutes…oh so exciting!
FUND REQUEST APPROVAL
The people working on peace week needed close to 100 dollars for various supplies, copies, and other materials…we approved their fund request at the meeting. Any of the profit from various events our money went towards will go back to the progressives account. This should be great and exciting to see our money doing great things!
PEACE WEEK
Peace Week is April 3-7. There are going to be many awesome events throughout the week. There will be speakers, activities, and other sorts of cool events. The next meeting will be on Tuesday March 28 @ 6 p.m. in the lounge by 259 CC. This is the week after we get back from spring break. Another note if anyone knows any contacts let Kyle Barber know at barber.kyle@students.uwlax.edu.
*If anyone has any old, soft, bright materials (like cloth or old jeans) keep them around for a project peace week is doing with project Linus and making blankets. Watch for more information on this topic!
MARRIAGE BAN
The question of the marriage ban is coming upon us. On the November (November 7) ballot there will be a referendum posing the question of what defines marriage. If the state votes yes to the referendum on gay marriage gay and lesbian couples will be banned from recognizing their commitments to one another through marriage or civil union. The denial of marriage would also drop many legal benefits for gay and lesbian couples that straight married couples receive. This is pretty HUGE so if you are interested in helping to ma ke sure this referendum does not pass check out fairwisconsin, actionwisconsin.com OR come to the training session TONIGHT @ 5:30 in the La Crosse Library and learn more of how you can help with the campaign! This would be a great opportunity especially for next year when we are really going to have to be campaigning this issue J
MIDWEST CLEAN ENERGY CONFERENCE
The Midwest Clean Energy Conference sounds like it was a blast! Kristen, Kevin, and Carrie had a great time and learned A LOT. The conference boosted their excitement about clean energy on our campus even more! They would really l ike to get our campus to commit to using 90% renewable energy by 2050. The big idea is that if our campus is responsible our students will be to. There are many things that we have already done or are in the process of doing to make this happen. Check out campusclimatechallenge.com for more information or talk to Kevin about direct action. Watch for more news to come on this way exciting idea and how to make sure it happens.
HOEDOWN IN THE HEARTLAND
On April 28-30th there will be a social action training conference @ Grinnell College in Iowa. If you would like to know more information email ftp@grinnell.edu.
AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL
Zak and a number of others are ready to get Amnesty International back up and running. This is a great opportunity to learn how to canvas and gain the experience you may have not had in the past w/canvassing. There will be food, beverages before and after, and a fun time. Most of all it is a way to try to get more support to bring the troops home. If you are not able to make it to canvassing don’t worry a lot of other help will be needed w/things like data entry and preparation for a way awesome rally we are thinking about having in April!

MOVIE NIGHT
Movie night will be back in action @ 247 GMH very soon! Watch for more information to come!

INVISIBLE CHILDREN
A few years ago, a group of people went down to Africa and Uganda. This will be a theme party…the theme being The Beatles. Come dressed as your favorite song or something out of your favorite Beatles song. You have two weeks to create a costume. How about organic food and hybrid cars?

Progressives at University of Wisconsin-La Crosse think so, and they’ve produced a “Green Is Sexy” calendar to buff the image of environmentalists. It features 12 pictures of students in various states of undress promoting green causes and products.

“Whether you call yourself a green, an environmentalist, a conservationist, an ecologist, a tree hugger, a dirt-worshiper, or a simple friend of the earth, you are sexy,” said Kristen Pitts, who helped put the calendar together.

Greens get unfairly cast as “eco-terrorists or crazies,” Pitts said. The calendar shows “we know how to have fun.”

Though the calendar’s theme is Green, several models may have turned blue during photo shoots. Six of the photos were taken outdoors in mid-November, and “every shot was cold,” Pitts said.

For the cover photo, which promotes alternative transportation, 18 students wearing only socks and shoes posed with bicycles from UW-L’s Green Bikes service.

Pitts said the coldest photo shoot was in the La Crosse Marsh, where they portaged a canoe so three women and one man could paddle naked. There was ice on the marsh that day, so the picture was digitally altered to put the canoe in a more summer-like scene, she said.

Indoor photos promote water conservation (“shower together”), eating low on the food chain (five naked co-eds eating a vegetarian Thanksgiving dinner) and education (20 naked people in a classroom).

Photographer Daniel Durtsche took all the pictures and managed to pose the models so most of their privates are strategically covered. Joe Gullo handled publishing.

“We’re all graduating this year,” Pitts said. “Hopefully, someone will pick it up and do it next year.”

Proceeds from calendar sales will be divided three ways between Campus Progressives, the UW-L Environmental Council and The Second Supper, a campus humor magazine published by Gullo.

The group also got sponsorships from Organic Valley, Popcorn Tavern, Simply Living and the People’s Food Co-op, Pitts said. They printed 250 copies to start and will order more if sales warrant.

The calendar is dedicated to Professor Kenn Maly, who is retiring from the philosophy department. Pitts said Maly, who also is the director of environmental studies, is an example of how one person can make a difference in the world.

PSC allows Xcel to increase rates

By STEVE CAHALAN | La Crosse Tribune

.
Xcel Energy will be allowed to raise electric and natural gas base rates in January, but less than the company had requested, officials said Thursday.

The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin on Thursday verbally approved an 11 percent increase in overall electric rates, and a 2.5 percent increase in overall natural gas rates.

The PSC said it trimmed the company’s electric request by about 4 percent and its natural gas request by 2.5 percent.

Under the PSC decision, an Xcel residential customer using 750 kilowatt hours a month will see a monthly increase of $8.50 for electric service, the company said. A residential customer using 65 therms per month will see a monthly increase of $2.25 for natural gas service.

Xcel said the new base rates are expected to take effect in mid-January, after the commission issues a written order to finalize the rates.

The utility said the increase in base rates is needed for major electric and natural gas system improvements for its growing customer base in Wisconsin, and also to cover higher costs for purchased power and fuel. It said the approval marks the first time since 1998 that Xcel has increased base rates for capital and operating expenses, other than periodic changes for the cost of fuel.

The company said when the new rates are finalized, its residential electric and natural gas customers will continue to have the lowest rates of all major utilities in Wisconsin.

“We’ve worked really hard keeping our rates low through efficiencies and minimizing expenses,” Xcel spokesman Brian Elwood said.

Charlie Higley, executive director of the Citizens Utility Board consumer watchdog group in Wisconsin, said he is glad the commission approved smaller rate increases than Xcel had sought. “But given high energy prices, we feel the commission should do far more to reduce utility profit levels and take other steps to lower rates for consumers,” he said.

“The commission, not only in this decision but with other utilities, has made movements in the right direction toward more reasonable rates, but more is needed,” Higley said.

In its decision, the commission set a return on equity for Xcel shareholders of 11 percent, down from the current 11.9 percent. It also decided to require quicker rate reductions when natural gas market prices go down.

Xcel filed its application for a rate increase in June and updated its request in August and December.

Calendars!!

Hey Everyone,

Sorry about so many e-mails about this darn calendar, but this is the latest for those of you whom want a calendar or ten...

Joe Gullo has been working on the layout of this calendar and I went and checked it out yesterday and it looks absolutely, positively amazing. Dan Durtsche, our photographer, took some fabulous pictures and seriously, it looks so good and so tasteful and so professional! Joe's taking this to the printers tomorrow (Monday) and will most likely have these things out and ready for you all by Wednesday at the latest.

I plan on being in Cartwright for most of the day on Wednesday to be available for people to pick up and pay for their calendars. Again, they are $10 and checks can be made to UWL Progressives. I thought that might get your attention...

The Progressives will be sponsoring a table on Wednesday (tomorrow) in Cartwright Center from 9:30 - 3:30. We will be lobbying State Senator Kapanke to support a more environmentally friendly version of the State-wide Energy Bill. We need lots of support from you and other members of the group to help gather support, and make a good showing for local TV, Radio, and Newspapers. This should be really fun, and will be one of the last group events of the semester. Please help make sure the semester ends with a bang by showing up to help out! Details below...

Wisconsin deserves a clean environment for Christmas, not a lump of coal!

Good Legislators will protect Wisconsin's Environment.
Naughty Legislators get COAL in their stockings.

The State Legislature recently introduced a new energy bill for Wisconsin. The Bill has some good portions but has four sections which could be potentially disastrous for Wisconsin's environment. We call these secti ons the "FOUR POISON PILLS." Students will have the opportunity to write letters, email, or call Senator Kapanke asking him to remove the Four Poison Pills from the Energy Bill.

We will be mailing Kapanke lumps of coal to let him know that good legislators end up on the "Nice List" by supporting our environment. Legislators who don't support the environment end up on the "Naught y List" and get coal for X-mas.

PLEASE STOP BY TO SEND A LETTER OR TO HELP OUT!

Thanks,
Ryan Schryver

PS. The basis behind this is showing that everyday environmental actions have an impact and are easy to do. How we are posing our monthly scenes is similar to calendars you may have seen before in floral shops and the like. The scenes will be of students, in their birthday suits, doing environmentally-friendly actions with strategically placed items to cover themselves. The photography, coordinating, editing and modeling of this calendar was all done by students and they have been doing an exceptional job with some really great scenes.

Anyway...
These calendars will be in print as soon as next week and I would like to get an idea of how many to print in our first batch of printing. So if you are seriously interested in buying one, two, or ten, please let me know. The calendar price will be $10 and the profits will go to benefit both Environmental Council and UWL Progressives. I will be taking orders by simply getting a name, number of copies and contact (phone preferably).

This will greatly help the printing process, so please let me know if you are interested!

Thanks,

Kristen
pitts.kris@students.uwlax.edu

neo-cons and long johns

Musical Perfromance
The meeting started off with a wonderful performance of the pigtails for peace song performed by Erin, Jill, and Julie. Imagine a locomotive that stops in every town, in every city, in every country, filled with people who share the same vision: to be the change they wish to see in the world; to make the world a better place for each and every person who lives in it. A place filled with courage, strength, respect, acceptance, kindness, generosity, fearlessness, and most importantly, love.

Want a ticket? Open your heart. Seek guidance when you are struggling. Take care of your body. Fill your brain with knowledge and your soul with light and inspiration. Explore your spirituality. Trust your instincts. Transform negative thoughts into positive ones. Water your internal garden so that you may continue to grow. Accept who you are and embrace your individuality. Be honest. Stand strong. Speak your mind. Love yourself. Then-

Share it. Treat people the way you wish to be treated. Give more than people expect. Do it with joy in your heart. A small act of kindness will mean more than you'll ever know. One of the best ways to give is to volunteer for an organization or cause you believe in. Check out the web sites below or think about what might be the best fit for your abilities and interests and find your own. The rest is up to you. And remember, you don't have to be a super-hero to change the world. This year myself (Kristen) and Kaitlynn Radloff will be co-directing the Earth Day Celebration, but we will need mucho helpo from all of you. In fact, one of my major goals this year is to create more of an actual coalition with local businesses and organizations, which I will expand upon at the meeting.

The foci of this meeting are:
1) To create committees (see below for what committees will be forming)
2) To discuss likes/dislikes of last years event (what to change, what to keep)
3) To brainstorm new ideas, new events, new set-ups, new locations, new weather

Now, I understand that 8 p.m. on a Tuesday does not work for everyone, so if you've got ideas or thoughts you'd like to share, please let me know. We really want to make this year's celebration the best possible and it's best if we address new ideas now while we're just starting the planning. Also, like I said above, we'd like to make this coalition more of a coalition, so if you know anyone from organizations, businesses, or the gym who you think would be interested in this, please let them know.

Thanks a bunch and I hope to see all your lovely faces next Tuesday!
Kristen

Committees to be formed (can be revised):
Fundraising (we need you now!)
Education (this may be split into K-5, 6-12)
Entertainment (musician line-up and speaker system arrangements)
Food/Refreshments
Booths
Education Events during week
Public Relations & Media
Designers (brochure, posters, banners)

Prog bus and more

“Weekly Installment” of the Progressives Minutes
November 29, 2005

SOA- We had a great little discussion about the experiences that we had on the SOA trip. Seems that everyone had a “kick ass” time! Let’s keep the energy and motivation that we’ve obtained at SOA flowing strong and use this to educate others about what we’ve learned.

SOA Education- There will be an SOA educational event and discussion on Wednesday December 7th @ 7:00 in 332 CC. We would like individuals who have gone to SOA to join in to tell about their experiences as well as new faces who are eager to learn about SOA. Talk to your professors and make announcements in class about the event. We want to spread awareness about the SOA.
On Monday morning at 7:00 a.m. we are meeting at the clock tower to put up crosses and posters to raise awareness as well as promote the event on the 7th. It’s early, but if enough people come we should be able to get it done quickly. Jill promises to bring food!!!
Also…if anyone has pictures from SOA, please e-mail them to Jill Hayes or Heather Mullee. They are trying to put together a power point.
hayes.jill@students.uwlax.edu
mullee.heat@students.uwlax.edu

Iraqi War Petitions- GOOD WORK! We’ve reached our goal and collected 2,606 signatures. That’s 10% more than our goal. If for some reason there aren’t enough after all the illegible are thrown out we may need to hold an emergency petition signing event. Keep your eyes open. We’ve worked this hard, let’s make sure we get this thing on the ballot!

WalMart- The video was a huge success! Kevin and a few others are working on possibly showing the movie at the Riv. We might be doing a table in CC handing out lit and talking to people about WalMart while promoting fair trade. Kevin will be e-mailing more information about that at a later date.

Earth Day- Earth Day is not as far away as we think folks. It’s time to start planning!!! The first meeting will be on Tuesday December 6 @ 8:00 p.m. in 332 CC. Come and join us to talk about new ideas, how last year went, and what we plan to do this year!!! Got questions? email lacrosseearthdaycoalition@yahoo.com or pitts.kris@students.uwlax.edu

It’s Sexy To Be Green Calendar- The LAST photo shoot for the “It’s Sexy to be Green” calendar will be this Saturday. The time and meeting place have yet to be determined but Kristen will be e-mailing you that information this week. We still need 4 more pict ures to fill the calendar and our goal is to get these printed before Christmas. Come get naked and have a great time! Remember, you’re educating others on the importance of responsible living….and you’re naked! What could be more fun?

Fighting Bob Fest- Fighting Bob Fest is a great festival where liberals across the Midwest get together to talk about Progressive issues. In the past there has always been a shortage of food vendors. We were thinking that having a booth and selling food would be a great way to raise money for Progressives. However, we need to start the planning soon! Anyone who is interested in working in a committee on this please contact Ryan Schryver. schryver.ryan@students.uwlax.edu

The Bus- Every year we spend a great deal of money on transporting people to events…SOA, Fighting Bob, D.C. (just to name a few) It would be extremely beneficial if we would have our own bus to do this AND it would save us a lot of money in the long run. Getting a bus would take a great deal of planning though so we need to find a group of dedicated individuals who are willing to see this project through. We would need to research the bus, find out how to convert it into biodiesel, and figure out how to raise the necessary funds to buy the bus. If you are interested in helping out e-mail Ryan Schryver. (see e-mail address above)

Move On Converence- There will be a week long political organizing conference in February put on by Move On. Anyone interested??? E-mail Ryan Schryver.

Moustaches For Peace- Moustaches for Peace and Pigtails for Peace got off to a great start at the beginning of the year but it’s lost a little bit of momentum. If we are serious about starting an international peace movement, we need to really start growing out our facial hair and tying our hair into pigtails. Everyone who sees Andrew Gilbert, tell him he needs to start growing his moustache out again.

Stop Global Warming Day- This Saturday is stop global warming day. Since we can’t stop it in one day, what we’d like to do is educate people on the effects their daily activities have on the environment. We were thinking of possibly taking a walk through Riverside Park through the Rotary Lights and talking to a few people and handing out some lit about the energy that’s wasted during the holiday season on decorations. More to come. Keep your eyes open.

Salvation Army Bell Ringing- The Salvation Army would like to have an all UW-L Bell Ringing day on December 10th. Jill found a local grocery store that needs bell ringers and she still has times that need to be filled. If you are interested in having a great time and raising some money for a great cause, e-mail Jill Hayes @ hayes.jill@students.uwlax.edu

Is Anyone Missing a Blue Fleece Blanket??? Andrew found a blue fleece blanket on the bus after SOA. If you are missing yours, e-mail him @ gilbert.andr@students.uwlax.edu

P-A-R-T-Y!!!- Rumors have been circulating about a Progressives party i n two weekends. We want to make it a theme party so we’re accepting suggestions. If you happen to come up with the theme that is selected for the Progressives bash, you get to drink for free. Be creative and e-mail your ideas to schryver.ryan@students.uwlax.edu or gilbert.andr@students.uwlax.edu May the best theme win

MEETING

James Kinsman
James came to talk to us about his upcoming campaign. He is running for the 94th assembly district position. He is currently a labor union representative in the state of WI, and a lobbyist. James is pro-choice, does not support the ban on birth control, faught to raise the minimum wage across the state, he worked on the budget to help the students fight against cutting financial aid and raising tuition. He came to us to ask if there was anyone interested in helping him with his campaign this summer, he is willing to open his house to students who want to work on this with him....look for more info on this and other events from Ryan...

SOA
WE NEED TO FILL THE BUS ASAP! Private Fuel Storage L.L.C. (includes Xcel Energy!) is proposing (and was recently granted a license) to build a nuclear waste facility on the Goshute Nation in Utah. IF this goes through, massive amounts of high-level nuclear waste will come from all corners of the states and be shipped on train. But what if the disaster is derailment of the nuclear waste train? Would anyone be safe...the routes (linked too below) clearly indicate that waste could travel through the City of La Crosse, through Rochester, Stoddard, and hundreds of cities from here to Utah. Are we prepared?

This conference may be one of the most important safety, environmental, and educational forums you have ever attended. This is brought to you by the People's legislature.

Mug Campaign
Reusable mugs for sale once again this year! Jill and Adam have been been wonderful enough to restart this program as a fundraiser for SOA. The mugs are now available in both red and blue and cost $5. You can use this mug on campus at any of the food locations and recieve 4oz extra free, and you can save waste by not using a new cup everytime you drink something on campus! This Thursday from 8:30-11 am at the clocktower we will be selling these mugs and giving out samples of Fair Trade coffee! If you would like to help out with this on Thursday (Tomorrow) Please feel free to show up and help out...its always a good time at the clocktower!

SOA
55 People have already signed up which is amazing, but we would like at least 70 people in order to fill more than one bus! Also, we need people over 25 to ride on the busses with us, so if you know any professors or community members who are interested in going on this trip with us, PLEASE contact them and let Andrew know! Hotel rooms can be made available for them if they wish to not camp along with us. New this year, we are camping! So if you have extra tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, other camping gear...please bring it along! Right now we are looking at a base price of around $120 if no fundraising is done...so we need to get going on the fundraising! We are planning on leaving Friday Nov 18th around 11am and returning Monday Nov 21 around 10am...last year we were back in time for Monday classes, so dont worry about those! This trip will be well worth a missed class or two...trust me! We are thinking that there will be room for approximately 75 students to take advantage of this amazing opportunity for a registration fee of only $10. This is an opportunity that we are fortunate to have here in La Crosse, so definitely take advantage of this! Dairyland Power and Xcel Energy are two of the utilities--a totally private venture---who will be responsible for the shipment, placement, and upkeep of that nuclear fuel. This will mean more than 10,000 shipments of such fuel across nearly every major city in the United States on its way to a site managed by a "limited liability corporation".

Learn about our community, learn about why you have heard nothing about this in La Crosse even though its headquarters and chief operating officer is from La Crosse. Although the international movement, Mustaches For Peace, started by our very own Ryan Schryver, has taken off with a ba-boom, Jill and Erin felt a little left out by their lack of hair on their upper lip. So they've started a new movement, it's currently a national movement, but will soon catch like wildfire and pigtails, mustaches and any other body hair one can muster up will be the way to peace. The power of hair is a beautiful thing.
So anyway, here is what was talked about this evening at our meeting...
By the way, the next Progressives meeting will be:

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 20th at 7:00 p.m.

(not 7:30 p.m.)

Minutes:

Friday, Sept. 16th...2:30 p.m. at the clocktower, meet and post fliers for meetings, bike movement, movie night, etc...the more people the easier this will be!

Monday, Sept. 19th...7:00 p.m. in 257 Cartwright...Anti-isms support group.
